Oldskool BBS Story - online with the Commodore 64

Naturally we had no animations
or sounds - just plain text. All BBS of
Hamburg together (and we had a few)
needed in 1983/84 less diskspace than
only one of these crap uncompressed
*.bmp pics nerds are posting in
online forums today

I switch my terminal to green fonts
looks cool when the Tornado Mailbox is
sending the "welcome message". 300 baud
that means 300 bits per second. Is this fast? Well
if you call a download of 100kb in 45 minutes fast
yes! Of course while the BSS is displaying the
hot news of 1985 you could feed your cat,
read Computer & Video Games or learn
a foreign language.

While being online you can't just turn up
the volume of your hifi to listen to the new
record of Billy Idol. Everything has to be quite if
you don't want to get too much garbage on screen
(remember you're online with an acoustic modem). And
please no typos a well - after 10 mistakes you'll get
an autologoff from the system. BTW: Sorry about
some screengrabs in german language only - but
I found only a few english (see next page)
postings on my old workspace disks. If
you're not into german I hope you get
an impression how it looked like
being online in the
early 80's...
